According to a social media post by Rockingham County Public Schools Superintendent Oskar Scheikl, "This afternoon (Wednesday), a McGaheysville Elementary bus with 16 students on board was struck by a train at the Rt.340/Island Ford Rd. intersection. 4 students were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. All families have been notified. At this point, details of the accident are still under investigation. Please keep the families of those affected in your thoughts."
As of late afternoon, Virginia State Police and Norfolk Southern investigators are on or are traveling to the scene to investigate the crash.

UPDATE: VSP (VA State Police) have charged the driver of the Rockingham County School bus hit by a NS train. State Police say the school bus stopped at a stop sign, with the rear of the bus partially hanging over the nearby train tracks. The railroad crossing arms came down and the rear of the bus was struck by a Norfolk Southern freight train. The driver of the bus, 70-year old James Kite of Elkton was charged with failure to obey a traffic control device/railroad crossing sign.
