Virginia has already recorded more measles cases in 2026 than in all of last year, according to new figures from the Virginia Department of Health.

So far, seven infections have been confirmed statewide, exceeding the five cases documented in 2025.

Despite the increase, health experts say overall vaccination coverage in the Commonwealth remains strong. Dr. William Petri, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Virginia, noted that about 95% of Virginia kindergarteners are vaccinated against measles — a level he described as highly protective against widespread transmission.

Most of the recent cases involve children younger than four, an age group that may not yet have completed the full two-dose measles immunization schedule. Petri explained that once both recommended doses are given — typically between ages one and four — protection is considered lifelong.

The measles vaccine is estimated to be about 97% effective and continues to be recommended by federal immunization experts. Given Virginia’s high vaccination rates, Petri said he does not expect the state to face a major outbreak, even with the recent uptick in cases.
