Authorities have identified the truck driver who died after a tractor-trailer plunged from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel early Sunday, Feb. 15, as 61-year-old Ronnie Andrews of Robersonville.

The crash happened around 6:40 a.m. when Andrews was driving a Perdue tractor-trailer that broke through the west-side guardrail and fell into the Chesapeake Bay. Perdue later confirmed that Andrews died at the scene.

His wife, Lovie Andrews, told 13NewsNow that her husband was a devoted family man known for his kindness and willingness to help others.

Debris from the crash — including blue poultry crates from the Perdue shipment — washed up along the nearby shoreline.

Recovery crews from the U.S. Coast Guard, Virginia Beach Marine Rescue, and Portsmouth-based Crofton Diving responded to the scene. Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel officials said Crofton Diving recovered both the truck and Andrews’ body from the water.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Officials have ruled out weather as a factor.
