Tim Kaine Visits Harrisonburg to Address Medicaid Cuts

Tim Kaine is making stops across Virginia to hear directly from communities about health care access, Medicaid funding, and rising costs. On Tuesday (January 20), his first visit brought him to Harrisonburg, where he met with local leaders and health care providers at Healthy Community Health Care Centers to focus on challenges facing rural health systems.

Kaine said safety-net clinics like HCHC depend heavily on Medicaid reimbursements, and recent federal budget changes could put added strain on both providers and patients. He warned that new funding reductions and increased administrative requirements may make it harder for rural clinics to stay open and for residents to receive timely care.

As a member of the Senate Health Committee, Kaine said hearing from frontline providers is critical as health care policy continues to dominate discussions in Washington. He emphasized that Medicaid cuts approved by Republican majorities last year are beginning to take effect in 2026, raising concern among rural providers already operating on thin margins.

Staffing shortages were also a key focus of the discussion. Kaine acknowledged the difficulty rural communities face in recruiting and retaining doctors and nurses and pointed to programs like Public Service Loan Forgiveness as an important incentive. He said expanding and strengthening those programs could help draw more health professionals to underserved areas.

Kaine plans to take feedback from the Harrisonburg visit back to Washington, where he intends to push against future Medicaid cuts during budget negotiations and advocate for stronger workforce incentives to support rural health care.
