When college football’s national championship kicks off Monday night, one Miami high school will have an unprecedented presence on the field.

Seven alumni from Christopher Columbus High School will take part in the title game as the Indiana Hoosiers face the Miami Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium—a rare convergence of players and coaches from the same school competing on college football’s biggest stage.

Among them is Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, a Heisman Trophy winner who once starred at Columbus, alongside his brother Alberto, Indiana’s backup quarterback. Three of their former high school teammates will line up for Miami, putting familiar faces on both sidelines.

The Columbus connections extend to coaching staffs as well. Miami head coach Mario Cristobal and assistant coach Alex Mirabal are also alumni of the school, bringing the total to seven former Columbus players and coaches involved in the championship.

For Columbus head coach Dave Dunn, who coached many of the players and worked alongside members of Miami’s staff, the moment represents years of relationships, development, and shared history converging in one game. With the championship being played in Miami—just miles from campus—the school plans to celebrate with a large watch party.

No matter the outcome, Christopher Columbus High School views the night as a historic achievement, marking a moment unlikely to be repeated: seven alumni from one high school competing for a national title in their own backyard.
