As Human Trafficking Awareness Month continues, the Harrisonburg Police Department is encouraging parents and caregivers to take a closer look at how children interact online, warning that many exploitation cases now begin digitally rather than face-to-face.

Detective Greg Miller, who investigates child exploitation cases and works with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, said online grooming is one of the most common patterns he encounters. Offenders often build trust gradually, frequently posing as peers on gaming platforms or social media before manipulating children into harmful situations.

Miller explained that these interactions can start innocently but may escalate into coercion, threats, or extortion involving explicit images. He emphasized that there are not always obvious warning signs, which can make exploitation difficult for parents to detect.

Children may also be reluctant to come forward, Miller said, often fearing punishment or believing they are to blame. That hesitation can allow abuse to continue unchecked. He urged adults to listen carefully if a child raises concerns—no matter how unlikely they may seem—and to focus on safety rather than discipline.

Law enforcement recommends starting conversations about online safety early and continuing them as children gain more access to devices. Parents are also encouraged to understand the apps and platforms their children use and remain actively involved, rather than relying solely on parental controls.

If inappropriate messages or images are discovered, Miller advised families not to confront the suspected individual or delete evidence. Instead, they should contact local law enforcement immediately so investigators can respond appropriately.

Above all, Miller stressed that children need reassurance and protection. Mistakes should never outweigh a child’s right to safety and support.
