The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) has identified the officer killed in Monday’s attack at River North Correctional Center as Jeremy Lewis Hall, 40. Hall, who joined the department in April 2024, died after being taken to a hospital.
VADOC Director Chad Dotson expressed condolences, saying the agency, the Commonwealth, and corrections professionals nationwide mourn Hall’s loss. Two other officers injured in the incident were treated and later released.
The attack occurred around 7:53 a.m. on November 17 at the Independence facility. VADOC confirmed an inmate was responsible, though the suspect’s name has not been disclosed. The prison was declared secure later that morning, and the Office of Law Enforcement Services continues to investigate.
Governor Glenn Youngkin offered prayers for Hall’s family and the injured officers, praising the daily sacrifices of corrections staff. Congressman Morgan Griffith also issued a statement, calling the attack “abhorrent” and voicing support for those who serve at River North.
Union leader Chuck Simpson, president of CWA/NCPSO Local 2204, described the incident as a “senseless attack” and emphasized the dangers corrections officers face. He pledged continued support for staff and their families.
