Blacksburg Police have shared details about a Virginia Tech student who is now in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Cristian Romo-Bermejo, identified by ICE as a Mexican national, was hospitalized for suspected alcohol poisoning. While at the hospital, police say he threatened medical staff and physically attacked officers. After being discharged, he was arrested for assaulting law enforcement and disorderly conduct, then taken to Montgomery County Jail.

ICE later picked him up from jail and transferred him to their facility in Farmville. Romo-Bermejo is scheduled for court hearings regarding the Blacksburg charges on July 22, but ICE is unsure if he will be returned to Montgomery County to appear.

An ICE representative noted that he is expected to attend court since he faces felony charges. No bond has been set, and he will remain in custody. ICE also confirmed that he will not be deported to Mexico until his criminal case is resolved.

According to a GoFundMe page supporting Cristian, he was brought to the U.S. at age two.
