A new private school is coming to Staunton this fall, bringing a fresh approach to education. Acton Academy Blue Ridge, founded by Sarah Geary and her husband, recently received approval from the City Council to operate out of Memorial Baptist Church. The school is designed to break away from traditional classroom structures by prioritizing student-led learning and peer mentorship.
“There won’t be typical desks or long lectures,” Geary says. “Students will have the freedom to explore subjects at their own pace.”
The school plans to use a single classroom initially, where older students will help guide younger ones through material they’ve already mastered. This learning model is based on the idea that children are naturally curious and learn best when they take control of their education. Geary, who was homeschooled, said she and her husband educated their four children using the same principles. Acton Academy Blue Ridge describes itself as a welcoming space for “entrepreneurs, creators, and free thinkers.”
Instead of traditional teaching methods, the school focuses on mentorship and interactive learning. “We’re not looking for lecturers,” Geary explained. “Our educators are more like guides, sparking curiosity and encouraging students to think deeply.”
While the school will employ Christian staff who sign a statement of faith, Geary emphasized that students and families of any faith are welcome. Tuition will be similar to other private schools in the area, but they hope financial concerns won’t prevent interested families from applying.
Enrollment is currently open, with classes beginning after Labor Day and running through July.
