Former EMU Professor Takes on Incumbent Tony Wilt in VA Delegates Race

Andrew Payton, a climate activist and former writing professor at Eastern Mennonite University, is running for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 34th District. Payton, 39, officially kicked off his campaign on Saturday in downtown Harrisonburg, where he announced his run against Republican incumbent Tony Wilt, 63, who has held the position since 2010.

Originally from Maryland, Payton now works as a curriculum designer for Learning Mate. He’s also been involved in local climate efforts as the former chair of the Climate Action Alliance of the Valley. In addition to his professional work, Payton is a father of two and says he feels lucky to raise his family in the Shenandoah Valley.

While his campaign began in March, Saturday marked his official public announcement. Addressing a supportive crowd at Court Square, Payton spoke passionately about the importance of protecting social programs and environmental regulations, warning that current leaders are actively working to dismantle them.

“They’re cutting Medicaid, education funding, and environmental protections—not because we asked, but because they no longer fear public backlash,” he said.

If elected, Payton says he plans to fight for public education, support for farmers, and more affordable housing and healthcare. He also emphasized helping families in need and ensuring children don’t go hungry.

The 34th District covers Harrisonburg and parts of central and eastern Rockingham County, including towns like Elkton, McGaheysville, Keezletown, Singers Glen, Linville, and Massanetta Springs.

The 2025 Virginia House of Delegates general election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 4, 2025. This election will determine all 100 seats in the House of Delegates.

Primary elections are set for Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Early in-person voting begins on Friday, September 19, 2025.
