As the weather warms up and days get longer, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is warning that more motorcycles may be on the roads.

Ken Slack, communications manager for VDOT’s Staunton district, emphasized the importance of staying alert while driving. He suggested paying extra attention to mirrors and the road to prevent accidents. Warmer weather brings out more pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, so it's crucial for drivers of regular vehicles to be mindful of all road users.

"It's easy to forget that the road is shared with motorcycles, cyclists, and pedestrians," Slack noted. "Drivers need to be patient and considerate, giving others enough space to safely navigate the roads, just as we’d want for ourselves."

Slack also highlighted the dangers of distracted driving, whether from texting, attending to kids, or eating while behind the wheel. Distractions reduce reaction time, making it harder to avoid potential accidents. He stressed that safe driving not only protects the driver but also others, especially those on foot or riding motorcycles, who lack the protection of a car’s metal frame.
