EMU Receives $2 Million NSF Grant to Support STEM Students

Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) has received a $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to help income-eligible students pursuing careers in STEM fields like biology, psychology, and engineering.

Through the NSF’s S-STEM program, 23 students will receive scholarships of up to $15,000 each over the next six years. In addition to financial aid, students will benefit from personalized mentoring, tutoring, and research opportunities with local professionals.

Dr. Kristopher Schmidt, a biology professor at EMU who led the grant initiative, emphasized the importance of the program in creating opportunities for first-generation and financially disadvantaged students. "Many don’t realize there are resources available to help them pursue higher education," he explained, adding that the grant will foster a sense of belonging among students.

The scholarship is open to all students, including high school seniors planning to attend EMU. Applications are due by Sunday, February 9.
