Bird flu cases are on the rise across the U.S., and Virginia is seeing a growing number of infections, particularly in its eastern regions. While the Shenandoah Valley hasn't been hit as hard, experts at the Wildlife Center of Virginia advise residents to take down bird feeders as a precaution.
Connor Gillespie, the center’s outreach director, told WHSV3 that “Removing bird feeders helps prevent the spread of disease. When birds gather in one spot, the chances of transmission increase.”
Since birds can travel from high-risk areas, removing feeders can reduce the chances of exposure to the virus near your home. Although bird flu mainly affects waterfowl, it can spread to humans, typically through close contact in poultry environments.
Staying cautious and informed is key to protecting both wildlife and public health.
