Eagles Fans Make Their Mark in Harrisonburg: A Sunday at Urgies

Downtown Harrisonburg enjoys a slow, peaceful vibe on Sundays—unless the Eagles are playing. Despite being a proud, historic Virginia town, there’s a surprisingly large number of Philadelphia Eagles fans who proudly don their colors around town all season. At 245 E Water St., in a small building adorned with flags and lights, sits the popular Urgies Cheesestakes. On Sundays, the tiny bar transforms into an electric hub of Eagles pride, with fans packed inside, cheering loudly, and enjoying the last of the weekend.

This week, the Eagles played the Commanders, the team you’d probably expect to be more popular at a Virginia school. But the bar was filled with way more green than red (& 10% discounts on food for wearing Eagles gear), and the final score reflected that (the Eagles won).

Mason Willett for WHSV3 spoke to the owners of the bar, Steven and Tommy Urglavitch, about their “Philly pride”. For the first time in a while, Steve and Tommy weren’t at their bar, joining in on the fun as usual. Instead, the brothers headed to Philly for a last minute game-time experience.

While they were missing from the local scene, their Philly pride was alive and well in Harrisonburg. “There’s a big Philly family up here, and we’re so happy to share the moment with all of them, even if we’re not there with you,” Steve told Willett. “A lot of JMU students are from the tri-state area, so there’s a lot of Eagles fans here. We just want to wish everyone down at Urgies a great time. Enjoy this moment!” he added.
