The 2024 elections in Virginia and West Virginia feature a wide range of races, from local officials to the presidential election. In the Shenandoah Valley, voters will decide on city and town council seats, Virginia’s U.S. Senate race, and the Sixth District seat in the House of Representatives. West Virginians will vote for three congressional seats, including two in the House and one in the Senate, as well as their governor, secretary of state, attorney general, and multiple state legislative seats. Both states also have constitutional amendments on the ballot.
Key Information for Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 5:
Voter Registration:
- The deadline to register in Virginia and West Virginia was Oct. 15. However, Virginia allows same-day voter registration, enabling voters to register and vote using a provisional ballot on Election Day. This can be done at the general registrar’s office, satellite early voting sites, or precincts on Election Day. Same-day registration is not available in West Virginia.
Polling Places:
- Virginia voters can find their polling place through the Virginia Department of Elections’ Citizen Portal.
- West Virginia voters can locate their polling place on the Secretary of State’s website.
Absentee and Mail Voting:
- In Virginia, absentee ballot requests must be made by Oct. 25. Mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day, mailed at the Post Office, and received by Nov. 8. Absentee ballots can also be dropped off in person.
- In West Virginia, absentee ballot applications must be received by the county clerk by Oct. 30. Mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received within five days after.
Early Voting:
- Early voting in Virginia and West Virginia is available through Nov. 2. No reason or application is required to vote early. Voters must provide their name, address, and identification.
Election Day Voting:
- Virginia polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 5.
- West Virginia polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 5.
What’s on the Ballot:
- The presidential race includes Kamala Harris (D), Donald Trump (R), Jill Stein (G), Chase Oliver (L), Claudia De la Cruz (I), and Cornel West (I).
- Virginia ballots include the U.S. Senate race between Sen. Tim Kaine (D) and Hung Cao (R), and a constitutional amendment regarding tax exemptions for surviving spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty.
- In the Shenandoah Valley, voters will choose between Rep. Ben Cline (R), Ken Mitchell (D), and Robby Wells (I) for the Sixth District seat.
- West Virginia ballots include the U.S. Senate race, gubernatorial race, and a constitutional amendment on medically assisted suicide. Voters will also choose representatives for District 1 and District 2 in the U.S. House.
