AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — Both southbound lanes of Interstate 81 have been shut down just north of Staunton due to a vehicle accident.
According to VDOT, all travel lanes, as well as shoulders, are closed on the southbound side of the interstate at mile marker 226.
A nearby traffic camera shows a number of emergency vehicles responding, and reports from the scene indicate a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
As of 12:45 p.m., delays from the scene stretched at least two miles, past the Verona exit at Exit 227.
There are no exits between Weyers Cave and Verona, meaning traffic is likely to continue to back up along the interstate with no other detour available. Vehicles that do exit the interstate to take Route 11 will likely face additional congestion there as well, as others take a similar path for an alternate route to the interstate.

This is a developing story.
