James Madison University will launch a new accelerated nursing option in summer 2026, giving students the chance to finish a BSN degree in just one year.
The model, called the Fast Flex BSN pathway, offers evening, weekend and summer courses, allowing students with jobs or caregiving responsibilities to earn a degree more quickly. Associate director Jamie Robinson says the goal is to help meet Virginia’s urgent need for more nurses who can start working immediately.
The idea grew after state leaders encouraged nursing programs to expand. With limited daytime clinical placements available in Harrisonburg, JMU designed a schedule that uses non-traditional hours. Clinical partners have agreed to take students during these evening and weekend shifts, which Robinson says mirrors the schedules new nurses will likely work after graduation.
The program will enroll 30 students, a cap meant to keep class sizes small and ensure close academic support. JMU plans to add an academic success coach for both the Fast Flex and traditional programs to help students manage the intensive coursework.
Only two Virginia universities currently offer a 12-month BSN, and JMU’s option stands out because students do not need a prior bachelor’s degree and can choose flexible class times. Robinson says interest has already been high, and upcoming information sessions will allow interested students to learn more.
