Harrisonburg City Council member George Hirschmann has resigned his seat

Harrisonburg City Council member George Hirschmann has resigned his seat, effective immediately, due to health reasons. He submitted a letter to council seen below. Hirschmann's letter to council mentions his accomplishments in his 6 years on council and mentions health issues that are causing his resignation.

Hirschmann is also remembered as a longtime meteorologist on WHSV TV before being elected to council.

Harrisonburg City Council will appoint an individual to Councilman Hirschmann’s seat within the next 30 days. A special election will take place in November for voters to select an individual to fill the remaining two years on that seat’s term.

The rest of council took to social media to ask that the community keep Councilman Hirschmann in their thoughts, and respect his privacy at this time. They thanked him for his service to The Friendly City, and for all that he has done for the community.
