Rockingham Schools Keep Mask Mandate For Now

From the Rockingham County School Board Home Page:

During the school board meeting on Monday, January 24, the board decided that masks will continue to be required for students and staff during the school day beginning tomorrow, January, 25, 2022. Masks will remain mandatory until the February 28 meeting when the policy will be reconsidered based on community spread at the time. If the Virginia Supreme Court issues a ruling prior to that meeting, we will adjust the policy accordingly. We will provide additional information related to events outside the school day in the next few days as those protocols are reviewed.

Although this was not a unanimous vote, all board members agree that the decision should be respected, even though it may be challenged in court. We do expect that the Supreme Court of VA will ultimately decide the legal aspects of masking rules in the next few weeks.

Governor Youngkin stated the following this weekend: "While the legal process continues on the parental opt out of mask mandates for their children in schools, I urge everyone to love your neighbor, to listen to school principals, and to trust the legal process." We ask that all students, staff, and families follow the RCPS Health and Safety plan based on tonight's decision and show kindness to others.
